* * *

This day couldn’t possibly move any slower. It’s only early afternoon, but I’m ready to go. Ready to get the list and find out for sure where Rory is. Then we can plan the next step. Last night I barely slept, but the adrenaline moving through my veins is like caffeine and I’m finding it impossible to sit still. If only we didn’t have to wait until after sunset to do this.

Asher went out on a delivery and took Ryder with him. Turk has been miserable ever since learning about Rory, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’ve been avoiding him. I just can’t deal with all the emotional stuff. It’s that sensitivity thing again. Layla went out shopping and she asked me to go, but Dex was already going with her and I figured they might like some time to themselves. Now I wish I had gone. There’s no one to talk to, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t relax.

I walk through the living quarters, down the hall, through the office and out into the warehouse. Then do a lap around the crates before retracing my steps. Back and forth, over and over again for over an hour. Jack glares at me every time I go by, but I can’t make myself stop. I’m on edge. The ticking of the clock taunts me until I want to rip it off the wall and stomp on it. I still have five hours to kill until we head out, and I’m about to lose my mind.

I’m walking through the office for the millionth time when Jack pushes his chair away from the desk and blocks my way. “What the hell are you doing? You’re making me nervous.”

“This whole waiting thing is driving me nuts.”

“Patience is a virtue,” he says gruffly, glaring up at me. “You can’t rush things or you screw up. You need to learn how to be patient. Sit down!”

I plop into the chair next to him and return his glare. He huffs as he scoots his chair back and returns to his paperwork like I’m not sitting next to him. My legs are still shaking, but to be honest, I’m relieved to have someone to talk to. Even if it is this grumpy old man.

“Asher said you were a lifer.” I hold my breath while I wait to find out if he’s going to tell me to shut up and mind my own business.

He doesn’t look at me when he grunts. “Eighteen years in the mines. Worked ten hours a day, seven days a week in that dark hole before being taken back to a windowless cell to sleep. The only time I saw the light of day was on the walk to and from the mines, otherwise my life was darkness. Always knew I would get out, though. Just had to wait for the right time. Eighteen years of waiting and keeping my eyes open for an opportunity, and it came in the form of a defective stick of dynamite.
